How Often Should Vehicle Maintenance Be Performed?

How Often Should Vehicle Maintenance Be Performed?
You’ve seen them. Probably heard them. Maybe even smelled them. Streaks in the windshield on a rainy day. Brakes squeaking at every stop. We’ve all had something come up when we were supposed to get the oil changed. Life happens, right?

You’ve seen them. Probably heard them. Maybe even smelled them. Streaks in the windshield on a rainy day. Brakes squeaking at every stop.

We’ve all had something come up when we were supposed to get the oil changed. Life happens, right? Afterwards, we went over by a couple hundred kilometers this time and it felt good waiting a couple of weeks. Time and money. We start to wonder if we really have to change the oil that often.

Missing the maintenance window over time causes long term damage. Our service technicians thoroughly check to ensure your vehicle is safe to drive.

Monthly

Monthly checks are a DIY situation. First, check that your windshield is not cracked, and check your wiper blades for splits. Top up on washer fluid. Test your high beams, brake lights, back up, and turn signals. Check oil and coolant levels by opening the hood when the engine is cool. Check tire pressure. If the required pressure isn’t embossed on the tire itself then you should be able to find it on your driver’s side door frame or manufacturer’s manual.

Check the tire tread depth too. Tires eventually wear down and need replacing. Checking the tread is easy if you have a toonie. Slide the toonie between the tire treads. If the bear’s paws hit the thread then your tires are in good condition. If the silver part of the toonie is covered by the treads then your tires are half worn. If your treads barely hit the letters in the silver portion of the toonie then it is time to buy new tires!

It is also a good idea to perform a monthly vehicle check before heading out on a long road trip. You don’t want to be stranded hours from home without a vehicle, especially in inclimate weather.

Bi-Annually

If your mileage hasn’t dictated that you go sooner, it is recommended that you take your vehicle in for service every six months. Each time you go in for service, the technician will likely change your oil and perhaps replace your oil filter. They will check your other fluids, inspect your brakes, and any wear on parts.

Seasonal

The most obvious seasonal maintenance is a tire swap! We all know Alberta winters are merciless, and booking a tire swap is one of the most important maintenance practices for your safety. A bonus of a tire swap is that a tire rotation is included!

Consistency is KEY! Regular maintenance isn’t something to ignore. By performing checks and maintenance, you increase the life of your vehicle. You reduce safety risks, and can feel confident that your money is staying where you want it - in your pocket. Schedule your maintenance around season changes, consider making November and April the months that you get your car serviced.
