2019 VW Atlas
The MQB modular platform stretches from the smallest and largest vehicles that VW offers. The VW Atlas is at the far end of that spectrum, still holding its ground as one of the larger vehicles against its other competitors in the midsize, three-row SUV segment. The Atlas comes with two powertrain configurations, a front-wheel-drive 2.0L four-cylinder turbocharged engine, or the 3.6L VR6 with 4Motion all-wheel-drive. These engines create 235hp/258lbft and 276hp/266hp respectively. These two power ratings may not seem like a big difference despite the increased capacity of the VR6 but the production of that power will be immediately noticeable when comparing back to back. The VR6 will comfortably pull the Atlas forward with a towing capacity of 5000lbs whereas the turbocharged four-cylinder may feel more alert, it only has a towing capacity of 2000lbs. The AWD and more powerful engine will likely seem more appropriate to buyers in this segment.
The Atlas features the best of VW's current suite of safety technology and user interfaces. The entry-level Atlas will house a 6.5'' touchscreen featuring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in the centre of the dash but an upgradable 8'' touchscreen unit is available. There's a lot of desirable technology available throughout the Atlas' four trim levels (Trendline, Comfortline, Highline, Execline) but some standout features include the heated front and second-row seats, the heated starring wheel, tri-zone climate control, and the panoramic glass roof. The top trim Execline exclusively carries VW's Digital Cockpit, the 12-speaker Fender sound system and the ambient lighting. The Atlas is a 7 passenger vehicle as standard, with the available captain chair second-row option as a package at an additional cost in the Highline and Execline trims.
Customers looking to spice up the looks of their Atlas will likely choose the R-Line Appearance package. Much like the packages available in the compact Tiguan SUV, and the first ever Arteon, the R-Line adds another dose of aggression to VW's lineup of cars. The front bumper is revised, R-Line badges are placed throughout the Atlas' interior and exterior, and the gunmetal wheels are included with this package.
The Atlas is a midsize SUV that hides its mass so incredibly well. Light steering and great visibility in all directions contribute to an SUV that feels much smaller than it is. Drivers of all shapes and sizes will find the front row spacious with all the major controls for the climate and media easy to learn and master.
