2019 VW Tiguan
The compact crossover class is one of the segments that's constantly expanding in the auto industry. The VW Tiguan lives in this ultra competitive segment but offers something that none of its competitors currently have available. The VW Tiguan has an option for 7 seats. This option for customers looking for a car with the greatest occupancy possible in the smallest packaging in a crossover on sale today. There's a lot more worth mentioning in the Tiguan, but the class exclusive 7 seat configuration is one of the Tiguan's standout features.
The Tiguan was thoroughly revived for the 2018 model year when the car moved onto the new MQB shared architecture that underpins a lot of current VW products spanning from the Golf to the mid-size Atlas SUV. The Tiguan comes in three trim lines (Trendline, Comfortline, Highline) for the Canadian market and one engine choice. It's a 2.0L turbocharged 4 cylinder engine with 184 horsepower and 221lb/ft, a healthy amount to propel this compact crossover. 4Motion AWD is available throughout the range but for the entry level Tiguan, it's a $2200 option to add on to the front wheel drive. Moving up in the range, an available 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android has flush, touch sensitive buttons (the entry level version has a smaller 6.5-inch screen with physical buttons on the side), 360 degree camera system, heated front seats and steering wheel, active safety equipment, LED lights, a full size glass roof, and the digital instrument cluster are found in the Comfortline and the Highline. Additionally, at the R-Line appearance package is only available for the Highline. It's largely an appearance package with more prominent air intakes, 19'' wheels, R badges dotted around the car, and a flat-bottomed steering wheel like what you'd see in the high performance Golf R.
Although the Tiguan's R-Line steering wheel doesn't have paddle mounted shifters, the driver can shift the 8 speed transmission manually with the gear lever. The Tiguan includes a few different driving modes that can be selected with a dial beside the gear lever. The on road modes include Eco, Normal, Sport and Custom. Snow mode, in addition to some off road modes allow the driver to choose the best powertrain setup depending on the environment. The Tiguan is a relaxed and spacious compact crossover. The interior is neatly put together with great materials and solid switchgear. Lots of storage space up front and the brilliant touchscreen make the Tiguan a very easy car to live with everyday.
