Comparing the 2026 VW Atlas and 2026 Kia Telluride for Families

The three-row SUV segment is full of vehicles chasing the same buyer, but the 2026 VW Atlas and Kia Telluride take noticeably different paths to get there. Volkswagen bets on turbocharged efficiency, enormous cargo flexibility and standard 4MOTION, while Kia holds onto a naturally aspirated V6 formula that pays off with a slightly higher towing ceiling in X-Pro form. The similarities on paper start to fade once you look at how each one is actually built.

Turbo Four Meets Naturally Aspirated V6

The 2026 Volkswagen Atlas uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder producing 269 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Kia Canada's latest published Telluride specifications list a 3.8-litre V6 with 291 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque, also paired with an eight-speed automatic. The Kia makes more horsepower, while the Volkswagen produces slightly more torque despite having two fewer cylinders. Both approaches deliver the output expected from a large family SUV, just with very different engine personalities.

AWD Comes Standard Either Way

Canadian weather makes drivetrain choice particularly relevant. Volkswagen equips every 2026 Atlas trim with 4MOTION all-wheel drive, while Kia's latest Canadian Telluride is also offered with AWD. The Atlas adds customizable Drive Modes, including a standard Eco mode, giving drivers more control over how the SUV responds to different conditions.

Atlas Finds More Room Behind the Seats

This is where Volkswagen makes a strong practical argument. The Atlas provides seating for seven passengers, or six with available second-row captain's chairs on select trims, and offers up to 2,735 litres of cargo capacity. Kia's published Telluride specifications list 2,455 litres behind the first row, 1,304 litres behind the second row and 601 litres behind the third. The Telluride remains a spacious three-row SUV, but the Atlas offers the larger maximum cargo figure.

Towing Stays Close Until X-Pro Steps In

The Atlas can tow up to 5,000 pounds, giving it useful capacity for trailers and recreational gear. Kia rates most Telluride versions at the same 5,000 pounds, while the Telluride X-Pro increases that figure to 5,500 pounds. For everyday towing needs, the two are closely matched. The X-Pro simply extends Kia's ceiling for shoppers who need the extra 500 pounds.

The Atlas Makes Wireless Tech Standard

Inside the 2026 Volkswagen Atlas, a 12-inch infotainment display, Volkswagen Digital Cockpit Pro, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and wireless charging are available as part of its technology-focused cabin. The Telluride takes a similarly connected approach, with Kia offering features such as its digital displays, Digital Key 2 Touch and available camera-based driver technology depending on trim.
